YouTube Music · browser beta

Your browser plays. Your heart follows.

Install in Chrome or Brave on your computer. No desktop companion required. You can then use LoveButton on your phone to favorite the music playing on that computer. Safari and native mobile playback capture are not supported in this beta.

Get the YouTube Music extension ↗
  1. Connect your channel.

    Choose Connect YouTube Music in LoveButton. Check the channel shown in Settings: this is where your hearts are saved, even if your playback tab uses a different account.

  2. Install the extension.

    Open the Chrome Web Store link above in the Chrome or Brave profile where you play YouTube Music and install LoveButton. You can use your own browser profile. Open the browser’s Extensions menu and optionally pin LoveButton so it is easy to find.

  3. Pair your browser.

    In Settings → YouTube Music, create a browser pairing code. Enter the one-use code in the extension, select the playback-sharing consent checkbox, then choose Connect and share. If the code expires, create another. Pairing another browser or profile replaces your previous browser connection; only one can share at a time.

  4. Press play.

    Open music.youtube.com. LoveButton chooses your most recently active playing music tab and keeps your paused track when nothing is playing. Check that the extension shows Connected to LoveButton and the expected track, then open LoveButton to use the heart. Pause sharing or Disconnect from the extension whenever you want.

  5. Choose what your heart does.

    YouTube Music hearts default to your connected YouTube channel. In Settings, choose Last.fm, Both or YouTube Music. Connecting Last.fm also enables scrobbling by default unless you opted out. Turn scrobbling off in Settings if another app already handles it; the choice persists across reconnects.

Quietly at home in your system tray.

Coming soonSigned Windows installers on the way.

Set up on your Mac

Install. Pair. Press play.

  1. 01

    Make room for a heart.

    Open the downloaded DMG to mount it, then drag LoveButton Companion to Applications. Eject the disk image and open LoveButton Companion from Applications. Look for its heart in your menu bar.

  2. 02

    One code connects you.

    Sign in to LoveButton, open Settings → Create pairing code, and copy your one-use code. Open Settings from the companion’s heart menu, paste the code, and choose Pair.

  3. 03

    Connect your Roon rooms.

    For Roon, keep this Mac on the same network as Roon Server and allow Local Network access if macOS asks. Enable LoveButton in Roon → Settings → Extensions, then enable the zones you want in LoveButton Settings. Skip this step if you only use Music.

  4. 04

    Bring Music along.

    For the Music app, turn on “Share what’s playing on this Mac” in companion Settings. Choose “Allow Music access…” and approve Automation access when macOS asks. Enable Apple Music in LoveButton Settings, then play something in Music on this Mac.

    Last.fm scrobbling is optional. Connect Last.fm and enable “Scrobble Apple Music to Last.fm” in LoveButton Settings if you want to send your listening history. Leave it off if another app already scrobbles Music.

    Choose Apple Music or Last.fm for Apple Music hearts in LoveButton Settings. Native favorites need a song in your Music library and Companion 0.4.0 or later. Roon hearts use Last.fm; Roon favorites stay unchanged.

Closing Settings keeps the companion running. Use its heart menu to reconnect, check for updates, or quit. Start at login is off until you choose it.

Updating your Mac app

Updates are manual. Choose “Check for updates…” from the heart menu to return here and download the latest DMG. Choose “Quit LoveButton” from the heart menu, open the new DMG, and drag LoveButton Companion to Applications, choosing Replace. Eject the disk image and reopen the app from Applications. Your pairing and settings stay in place.

Connector license and third-party notices

Set up your Linux connector.

These steps are for a Linux host with systemd and sudo access. Download an available build above before starting.

  1. Verify the download

    Run the command for your architecture and compare its full output checksum with the SHA256 shown beside the download. Continue only when they match.

    sha256sum lovebutton-roon-linux-amd64
    # For ARM: sha256sum lovebutton-roon-linux-arm64
  2. Give the connector its own account

    Run these once. Substitute arm64 in the binary filename for an ARM machine.

    sudo useradd --system --user-group --home-dir /var/lib/lovebutton-roon --shell /usr/sbin/nologin lovebutton-roon
    sudo install -m 0755 lovebutton-roon-linux-amd64 /usr/local/bin/lovebutton-roon
    sudo install -d -m 0700 -o lovebutton-roon -g lovebutton-roon /var/lib/lovebutton-roon
  3. Pair with your LoveButton account

    Open LoveButton, connect Last.fm, then choose Settings → Create pairing code. On Linux, replace the example HTTPS address with the LoveButton origin you are using, without a trailing path. The second command prompts for your one-use code.

    sudo -u lovebutton-roon /usr/local/bin/lovebutton-roon -config-dir /var/lib/lovebutton-roon -bridge https://YOUR-LOVEBUTTON-ORIGIN config
    sudo -u lovebutton-roon /usr/local/bin/lovebutton-roon -config-dir /var/lib/lovebutton-roon pair

    Keep this state directory private. It holds the connector credentials; do not copy it to another running connector.

  4. Install the systemd service

    Create /etc/systemd/system/lovebutton-roon.service with the contents below using sudoedit /etc/systemd/system/lovebutton-roon.service.

    Show the complete service file
    [Unit]
    Description=Lovebutton Roon connector
    Wants=network-online.target
    After=network-online.target

    [Service]
    Type=simple
    User=lovebutton-roon
    Group=lovebutton-roon
    StateDirectory=lovebutton-roon
    StateDirectoryMode=0700
    ExecStart=/usr/local/bin/lovebutton-roon -config-dir /var/lib/lovebutton-roon serve
    Restart=on-failure
    RestartSec=5
    TimeoutStopSec=20
    UMask=0077
    NoNewPrivileges=true
    PrivateTmp=true
    ProtectSystem=strict
    ProtectHome=true
    ProtectKernelTunables=true
    ProtectControlGroups=true
    RestrictAddressFamilies=AF_INET AF_INET6 AF_UNIX

    [Install]
    WantedBy=multi-user.target

    Then load and start the service:

    sudo systemctl daemon-reload
    sudo systemctl enable --now lovebutton-roon
    sudo systemctl status lovebutton-roon
    sudo journalctl -u lovebutton-roon -n 50 --no-pager
  5. Authorize in Roon, then enable your zones

    Open Roon → Settings → Extensions and enable Lovebutton. You can do this in the Roon app on your Mac: the extension itself runs on Linux. Cloud pairing and this Roon authorization are separate steps.

    Return to LoveButton → Settings, find your connector, and enable the zones you want to share. Track metadata stays private until each zone is enabled. Switch between zones in Now using the source picker, arrow buttons, or a deliberate vertical swipe.

    Roon hearts love and unlove tracks on Last.fm. They do not change Roon favorites.

If the room stays quiet.

Check the service logs, both authorizations, and zone toggles. The Linux host needs outbound HTTPS to LoveButton and LAN UDP/WebSocket access to Roon. VM networking must allow Roon discovery on your trusted LAN.

If discovery does not work, stop the service and configure -roon-host IP:PORT with the actual API address reported by Roon, then restart. Do not assume a fixed port. Stop the service before changing its configuration.
